Journey of Healing Through Baking

Last year, a friend gifted me a cookbook called Breadsong by Kitty and Al Tait for my birthday. What seemed like a collection of bread related (truly magical) recipes is a beautiful memoir. It’s the story of Kitty Tait, a teenager who struggled with depression for a long time before finding her purpose and healing, in the rhythmic act of baking bread. The book takes us through her journey, from her early steps in the kitchen to building a life centered around the joys of baking. Kitty’s story is a testament to the transformative power of baking, not just as a culinary skill but as a pathway to mental well-being and her journey resonated deeply with me.

Reading Breadsong I couldn’t help but consistently draw parallels to my own journey. Baking Hope is born from my own experience of using baking as a tool to process grief and deal with anxiety and stress. Like Kitty, I found solace in the kitchen, it has become my therapy. Over the years, through baking I began to heal and this journey has become the foundation of Baking Hope.

The Healing Power of Baking
Both Breadsong and Baking Hope highlight the therapeutic nature of baking. There is something inherently meditative about the process, the repetition of kneading, the connection to dough, the patience required for bread to rise. It’s a reminder of the importance of slowing down, of being mindful. For Kitty, baking bread helped her take back control of her life. For me, it is becoming a tool for empowerment, for myself and as I am starting to share this experience and knowledge, for many others too. The goal is to create a space where everyone can experience the simple, mindful rhythm of baking and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. Baking becomes more than a skill- it becomes a journey of self-discovery, a way to reconnect with oneself, and a reminder that healing and growth can happen in the smallest of moments.

Baking as a Source for Purpose
Kitty’s journey in Breadsong is one of discovering purpose through baking, and it’s a story that feels intimately familiar. Baking has a transformative quality, not only with what it creates but what it bring out in us. My work with Baking Hope aims to extend this same sense of purpose, belonging and healing to others. Whether it’s through our community baking sessions or our upcoming programs for women in recovery shelters the goal is the same, to use the act of baking as a path to find purpose and renewal. Through the skills learned and the moments shared, my hope is that everyone leaves with a sense of purpose, even if it’s just the satisfaction of creating something beautiful and nourishing.

Connections Through Baking
One of the most touching parts of Breadsong is how baking allowed Kitty to reconnect, first with herself , then with her father and ultimately with her community. Kitty describes how she went from baking as a hobby to opening her own bakery with her father. This beautifully illustrates how baking can bring people together, transitioning from a deeply personal experience to a public one and going from an individual experience into shared ones. Similarly for me, what started as a way to find comfort, solace, and creative expression, over time, it became clear that the joy and healing I found in baking were gifts that could be shared with others. Baking Hope emerged from this realization that baking could be so much more than a solitary experience, it is a tool for connection, empowerment, and community.

Rising Together
In Breadsong, the act of waiting for bread to rise is a powerful metaphor for the slow, often unseen process of healing and growth. This resonates with me deeply, as it mirrors the journey I am on- a journey of personal growth, discovery, and resilience, and also one of empowering others along the way. Like the slow, quiet rise of dough, this path is gradual, requiring patience and faith in the process, even when the results aren’t immediately visible. I am learning to trust in the power of small, unseen changes and to believe that, just like dough in the warmth of the oven, we are all capable of expanding into something fuller and richer. Baking Hope aims to be more than an initiative, we aim to be a community where we all rise together, shaped by our own challenges and aspirations, overcoming obstacles and finding strength throughout the process.

Conclusion

In sharing these stories, I hope to inspire others to discover the magic of baking for themselves. If you’re someone who believes in the transformative power of simple, everyday actions, Breadsong is a must-read. For me, her book was a reaffirmation of the power of baking. It’s a story of finding hope in the darkest times, just as I found hope in the mission of Baking Hope. Both journeys are ongoing, and both are fueled by a shared passion for baking and its ability to change lives, one recipe at a time.
